KUALA LUMPUR: The Government may introduce planning legislation similar to Hong Kong’s guidelines of hillside development to prevent more landslides in future.
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said the Government was willing to consider any suggestion when he was asked to comment on the statement by the Public Accounts Committee that it would look into introducing a new hillside law based on Hong Kong’s Buildings Ordinance.
They can implement 1001 rules they want but the problem is enforcement. What is the use of making so many rules when there is no will power to enforce it? In the end, we go back to square one. Worst still, we may see more landslides in the future and the PM at the time will declare again and again he is going to ban hill slope project when malaysians had forgotten the previous incident 15 years ago. One fella bribe another to ‘approve’ their illegal project and hence, the cycle continues. So if they want to introduce hillside development rules like the one in HK, better make sure they enforce it otherwise there is no point in having stringent laws if there is no political will to enforce it.
